Repeat prescriptions are available for some long term treatments. Your prescriptions are printed by the computer. On the right hand side of the computer slip are details of your repeat medication. Please check these details are correct. When you need repeat medication, tick the items you require on the slip then order using one of the following options:
Please allow 48 hours from the time of ordering for the doctor to check and sign your prescription.
If you post your prescription please ensure you allow at least 3 days for postage 1 way or 5 days for 2 way postage. This will vary at Bank Holidays.
Every 6 months your Doctor will request you attend surgery to assess your medication and make sure you have no problems. We routinely monitor over or under ordering of medication through our repeat prescription policy, therefore we may need to advise if you are ordering early.
Please ensure you order 1 or 2 days before your medication runs out (allow for bank holidays and weekends)
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.
If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 14 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.

If so our in house medicines manager can assist you. Contact reception and ask to speak to Karen.
The medicines manager looks at patients’ medications to see if any improvements can be made to the prescription for the benefit of the patient.
Synchronisation – this is where medication quantities are altered so that all medications run out or are ordered at the same time. This results in fewer requests, saving the patient time.
Add Directions – some medications state to be taken as directed. The medicines manager will add more precise directions, ie, take one tablet daily, etc. This helps to make sure the patient is taking their medication correctly.
Repeat Dispensing – certain criteria must be met for a patient to be put onto repeat dispensing.
This is where a ‘batch’ of 6 monthly prescriptions is issued at one time, which allows the patient to go straight to the pharmacy rather than having to order their medications from the GP every month.
The medicines manager always liases with the GP who decides if any changes are required. NO changes will occur without the GP/patients' permission/request.

If you have any concerns about your condition and the medications you are taking please make an appointment to see your usual doctor.

Patient Information about the Burnley Locality Waste Reduction Scheme
Many Burnley residents have a ‘repeat prescription’ meaning that they can regularly receive a certain medication without having to see their doctor each time.
There are various ways to order a repeat prescription from your GP practice:
Do you order your repeat prescription via your community pharmacy or dispensing company?
Important changes to the way ‘repeat prescriptions’ are ordered via community pharmacies.

What is changing?
From now, all GP practices in Burnley will only accept requests for repeat prescriptions from pharmacies where a member of pharmacy staff:
Where this has not taken place GP practices will refuse to accept the request. This may result in there being a delay in you receiving your regular medication.
The pharmacy will use the tear-off slip on the right hand side of your prescription to re-order your repeat. This may mean that you will need to leave this slip at the pharmacy when you collect your medicines. Please be aware that this slip may contain messages from the practice regarding your healthcare.
Why is this happening?
The GP practices have chosen to enforce these rules to address a serious safety concern. Evidence collected over the past 2 years has highlighted major safety concerns relating to inappropriate ordering for patients. Some patients have built up stocks of unused medicines. This change will mean that your GP has a better ability to monitor and control what medicines you do and do not use.
The conversation about whether each individual item is required has to take place within 10 days of the repeat request being due because this will give the surgery enough time to have your repeat prescription ready and time for you to collect or have the medicine delivered.
Why does the conversation need to take place within 10 days of my repeat being due?
The conversation should take place within 10 days because this improves the accuracy of the ordering of the repeat prescription.
Medicines can be started or stopped or the dosage altered at any time e.g. following appointments. Having the conversation as late as possible will ensure that medicines are up to date and accurate.
Finally, it is important that NHS money is used as efficiently as possible. We aim to save a large amount of money on unused medicines, money we will use to benefit the health of the people of Burnley.
Please let your surgery know if your community pharmacy does not have a conversation with you each month, within 10 days of your repeat request being due yet continues to deliver your medicines.
What is not changing?
Pharmacies that collect prescriptions from GP surgeries will still do so.
Pharmacies that deliver medications and other items to your door will still do so.
